וַיַּ֤עַשׂ יְהֹוָה֙ כֵּ֔ן וַיָּבֹא֙ עָרֹ֣ב כָּבֵ֔ד בֵּ֥יתָה פַרְעֹ֖ה וּבֵ֣ית עֲבָדָ֑יו וּבְכׇל־אֶ֧רֶץ מִצְרַ֛יִם תִּשָּׁחֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפְּנֵ֥י הֶעָרֹֽב׃

The sudden invasion of wild animals upon Egypt strikes with immense force, bringing terror, destruction, and death. This event is not a random natural migration of beasts, but a precise and calculated divine strike. Unlike other plagues initiated through Moses and Aaron, God Himself brings the animals and directs them into the Egyptian homes as a direct punishment for their idolatry [ביאור יש״ר, שפתי כהן]. The narrative deliberately skips over Pharaoh's predictable refusal to yield, moving immediately to the fulfillment of the warning [קאסוטו]. The moment Moses finishes speaking, the animals leave their habitats, arriving in Egypt the very next day [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם].

The invading swarm is a massive, chaotic mixture of diverse creatures. It includes not only deadly predators like lions, bears, and leopards, but also foxes, rabbits, mice, creeping insects, and even goats. The punishment is tailored with exact justice, matching the severity of each person's wickedness. A highly corrupt individual is attacked by a lion, while someone less guilty is confronted by a dog. In other homes, rodents swarm in to ruin property and crops [ביאור יש״ר]. Because these animals arrive entirely on their own, the plague feels far more severe and terrifyingly tangible than the disasters that preceded it [אבן עזרא].

The spread of the beasts reveals careful divine supervision. The attack targets the king and his officials first, as they are the primary architects and instigators of the Israelites' enslavement, before moving on to the rest of the population [העמק דבר, אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The plague even reaches distant Egyptian provinces that have no direct contact with the Israelites, punishing the entire kingdom for its widespread idolatry [ביאור יש״ר]. Amidst this nationwide assault, the divine promise to protect the Israelites and spare their region is clearly fulfilled, even without being explicitly stated [ברכת אשר על התורה].

The resulting devastation is absolute. Wild animals roam completely unchecked, killing both humans and livestock [בכור שור, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and laying waste to everything in the country [אור החיים]. This widespread ruin specifically targets and eliminates the wicked population [דברי דוד]. The destruction unfolds exactly according to God's decree [שפתי כהן], leaving the land utterly ravaged [רש״י, קאסוטו, מזרחי]. Recognizing the sheer scale of the disaster, Pharaoh and his officials realize that their country faces complete annihilation if they do not act quickly, prompting them to urgently summon Moses [העמק דבר].
