בראשית, פרק י׳, פסוק כ״ד

פרשת נח

Genesis 10:24Sefaria

וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁ֖ד יָלַ֣ד אֶת־שָׁ֑לַח וְשֶׁ֖לַח יָלַ֥ד אֶת־עֵֽבֶר׃

The lineage tracing the descendants of Shem serves as the central and most important family tree for the continuation of history [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. In many biblical genealogies, the line between the birth of a single person and the emergence of an entire nation often blurs. In this specific family line, however, the focus rests heavily on distinct individuals. The three figures introduced here appear later in the narrative as specific, recognizable people. Because of this focus on private individuals, the physical act of giving birth is strongly emphasized, a theme that carries through the entire section.

Some external traditions insert an additional generation, a figure named Kenan, into this family line to create a parallel with earlier genealogies. However, this insertion appears to be a later addition rather than an original part of the lineage [קאסוטו].

The exact origins of the specific names in this family tree remain largely a mystery. Various attempts have been made to explain the name Shelah as an ancient geographical location, a forgotten deity, or a common word that eventually became a personal name. Yet, all of these theories lack factual support and remain mere speculation [קאסוטו]. Similarly, scholars have sometimes suggested that Eber received his name specifically because the Hebrew people eventually descended from him. This idea is firmly rejected, as the nation of Israel never traced its core identity back to this early ancestor, but rather exclusively to its primary patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Consequently, the true reason behind his name remains entirely unknown [שד״ל].
