וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח בְּיַד֙ נָתָ֣ן הַנָּבִ֔יא וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ יְדִ֣ידְיָ֑הּ בַּעֲב֖וּר יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

Following a period of severe crisis, a profound turning point occurs in the relationship between God, David, and Nathan the prophet. Rather than arriving with a harsh rebuke as he had in the past, Nathan brings a message of deep love and reconciliation [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God sends the prophet with the comforting news that the newborn child is beloved by Him [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. In response to this divine message, the child is named Jedidiah to reflect the pure love at the heart of the announcement, signifying one who is beloved by God [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This specific title is granted entirely because of God's stated affection for the boy [רש״י, מצודת דוד].

Even though he receives this special designation, the child is remembered throughout history by his original name, Solomon. He is initially named Solomon, and the title Jedidiah is added only after David hears of God's love from the prophet. The continued use of the name Solomon rests in the distinct essence of each name. While Jedidiah captures God's personal affection for the child, Solomon represents the future era of peace destined for Israel and the promise that this child will eventually build the house of God [אברבנאל].

Beyond the meaning of the names, God's choice of this child and His openly declared love serve as retroactive proof regarding the true nature of David and Bathsheba's relationship. Tradition notes that soldiers in David's army would provide their wives with conditional divorce documents before leaving for battle, meaning Bathsheba was not legally considered a married woman at the time. The fact that God loves the child, desires him, and designates him for the throne demonstrates that the union was not a severe violation. God would not select a child born from an adulterous or strictly forbidden relationship to continue the royal dynasty. Ultimately, this reveals that Bathsheba was always destined for David, but their relationship was simply acted upon too early and in improper haste [רלב״ג].
