I Chronicles 4:12Sefaria

Biblical genealogies often do more than just list names; they map out the deep connections between families, the cities they established, and the unique titles they carried. In tracing the descendants of Eshton, historical figures are closely tied to the places they lived and the legacies they left behind.

One specific descendant, Tehinnah, is closely associated with Ir Nahash, which is identified as an actual city [רש״י]. He earned a title linking him to this location either because he served as the governing minister and ruler of the city [רש״י], or because his descendants were the ones who originally founded and settled the area [רד״ק].

The lineage concludes by identifying a group known as the men of Recah. This designation specifically refers to the sons of Eshton [רש״י], though another perspective suggests it encompasses the broader family line, including all the descendants of Chelub mentioned earlier in the genealogy [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

The term Recah itself carries different meanings. It may simply refer to the geographical region where the family resided [רש״י]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that Recah was a distinct family name or a special title attached to this lineage. While the exact reason they received this specific name is not recorded, it was a familiar and widely understood reference among the people living during that time.
