I Chronicles 4:19Sefaria

The genealogical records in the Book of Chronicles frequently introduce new figures, drawing upon more extensive family scrolls that were later condensed. This section traces the lineage of a specific woman, identified primarily as the sister of Naham, leading to various interpretations about her exact identity and family structure.

One perspective understands Hodiah as the name of her husband. Although this man has not been introduced previously, the narrative pauses to detail his descendants, a common stylistic choice in the Book of Chronicles [רד״ק]. Building on this idea, another view suggests that Hodiah was actually a son of Bithiah, the daughter of Pharaoh, who was mentioned earlier in the lineage. According to this understanding, the author deliberately omitted most of Hodiah's children from his other wives because they were not prominent figures. Instead, the focus remains solely on the distinguished and important sons born to his wife, the sister of Naham [מלבי״ם].

Conversely, a different approach argues that Hodiah is not the husband at all, but rather the name of the woman herself. In this view, Hodiah is the same Jewish woman mentioned in earlier passages. She is simply identified as Naham's sister, while the identity of her husband is left unrecorded [רלב״ג].

Regardless of her exact identity, the lineage highlights the sons born to this woman, specifically noting the father of Keilah the Garmite and Eshtemoa the Maacathite [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Clarifying these titles, it is explained that the Garmite is actually the given name of the man who fathered a son named Keilah. His brother, Eshtemoa, held a position of leadership, serving as the head of the city of Maacah [מלבי״ם].
