I Chronicles 4:25Sefaria

שַׁלֻּ֥ם בְּנ֛וֹ מִבְשָׂ֥ם בְּנ֖וֹ מִשְׁמָ֥ע בְּנֽוֹ׃

Tracing a family tree often reveals more than just biological ancestry, as it can also map the history of a tribe's leadership. The recorded lineage outlines a chain of generations, though the exact nature of this succession is understood in two distinct ways.

The primary approach among commentators is to read the list as a direct, unbroken biological sequence from father to son. In this view, Shallum is the immediate son of Shaul, Mibsam is the son of Shallum, and the direct family line continues step by step down to Mishma [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In contrast to a simple family tree, another perspective views this record as a history of political leadership. Rather than a standard biological sequence, the account specifically counts the princes of the tribe, intentionally skipping over any generations that did not hold this high office. According to this approach, Shallum is not the biological son of Shaul. Instead, time is skipped forward to reach him, and he is actually identified as Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, the very first prince of the tribe of Simeon. The repeated emphasis on succession throughout the record reflects the passing of the leadership baton from one ruler to the next, continuing all the way down to Mishma. At Mishma, however, this continuous chain of political authority was broken. As a result, his own children are left out of the record entirely because they no longer served as tribal leaders [מלבי״ם].
