King Rehoboam faces a critical turning point in his reign, forced to answer the nation's plea for tax relief. He makes a fateful choice to react with aggression, entirely rejecting the moderate path suggested by the older generation. While it was already established that he had turned away from the elders, this decisive moment reveals his mindset and the sheer gravity of his error [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Interestingly, the older and younger advisors actually shared the exact same goal: cementing the new king's absolute authority. Their disagreement was purely tactical. The elders believed in securing power through kindness and a soft approach, while the younger men believed in ruling through fear and intimidation [מלבי״ם].

Opting for intimidation, the king answered the people harshly [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The younger advisors had originally presented a two-part strategy. First, they offered a logical justification for the heavier burden, arguing that since Rehoboam lacked his father's wisdom, he required greater resources to secure his position. Second, they provided a set of severe threats. Rehoboam ignored the rational explanation and adopted only the aggressive threats [אלשיך]. Even then, he did not recite their script perfectly. He was too embarrassed to use their exact phrase comparing his little finger to his father's waist, choosing instead to deliver only the remaining harsh words [אברבנאל].

The narrative emphasizes his rejection of the elders' advice a second time to highlight a tragic missed opportunity. Even after opening his speech with blunt threats, Rehoboam still had a chance to correct his course. He could have concluded by promising that, despite his tough words, he would ultimately grant the people's request and ease their burden. Doing so would have fulfilled the core of the elders' strategy. By failing to offer any concession, his rejection of their wisdom became absolute [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Ultimately, his behavior demonstrates that he was not simply following the specific advice of his friends, but acting out of a childish impulsiveness, completely unable to foresee the long-term consequences of his actions [אלשיך].
