Standing at a critical crossroads, a new leader faces the heavy demands of his nation and turns to the veteran political advisors of the previous administration. Even before the nation fully accepts his rule, Rehoboam is already referred to by the title of king. This reflects his own internal mindset. He views himself as an absolute monarch who does not need the consent of the people, nor does he feel any obligation to fulfill their requests [מלבי״ם].
To handle the growing crisis, he seeks the counsel of the experienced government officials who served his father, Solomon [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His choice to consult these specific elders is highly calculated. Having managed a massive empire, they know exactly how to run an absolute monarchy and are deeply familiar with the political maneuvers required to maintain complete control [מלבי״ם].
The historical record notes that these elders served Solomon while he was alive. While this fact might seem obvious, it emphasizes that they were Solomon's trusted confidants throughout his entire life, making them the most fitting guides for the new ruler. Their guidance is fundamentally sound, yet Rehoboam's own poor character ultimately leads him to reject it. This rejection serves as the vehicle for God to fulfill His decree to tear the kingdom away, exactly as prophesied by Ahijah the Shilonite [רלב״ג]. Another perspective suggests that this detail highlights the exceptional quality of their counsel. Even after Solomon's death, the elders provide advice so wise and fitting that it is as if Solomon himself is still alive and guiding the nation [רד״ק].
When Rehoboam asks the elders for their input, he is essentially asking them to confer among themselves to formulate a response on his behalf [רד״ק]. However, his approach betrays his true intentions. He is not asking for their opinion on the actual request made by the people. In his mind, the decision is already final: he will not yield to their demands, choosing instead to maintain unlimited power. The consultation is purely tactical. He merely wants to know the best strategic way to dismiss the nation. He is asking the elders how to package his rejection, seeking their advice on whether to use gentle words, deception, or outright threats [מלבי״ם].
