The dramatic climax of the rebellion unfolds with absolute precision, both in the exact moment it happens and the physical way the miracle takes place. God waited for the very second Moses finished his warning, acting without any delay [אור החיים]. This pause was purposeful. It allowed Moses to deliver his entire message, showing patience and offering the rebels a final chance to change their ways before facing their punishment [חומש קהת]. Yet, the divine response followed so swiftly that Moses did not even have the chance to repeat his conditions, as he normally would have, before the disaster struck [חתם סופר].

The physical event was entirely supernatural, distinct from a standard natural disaster. It began with the surface layer of the ground cracking right beneath the rebels' feet [ביאור שטיינזלץ, העמק דבר]. This initial splitting of the topsoil served a specific purpose: it cleared the way to reveal a miraculous opening deep within the earth, a phenomenon hidden and prepared specifically for this moment since the six days of creation [ביאור יש"ר, מלבי"ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that this was a completely new creation rather than a natural earthquake. During a typical earthquake, the ground breaks apart, people fall inside, and the gap remains open. This event, however, was a complex, supernatural process [רבנו בחיי]. The ground did not merely open; it acted as a spiritual force, actively pulling the sinners downward even before their physical bodies began to drop [אלשיך].

Furthermore, the collapse was carefully designed to protect the rest of the Israelite camp. To shield the innocent bystanders from the intense heat of hell below, the main split did not occur wide open on the surface. Instead, the gap formed deep within the lower layers of the earth. A void opened directly under the rebels' feet, dropping them straight down into the depths without causing any harm to the surrounding environment [שפתי כהן].
