Numbers 4:49Sefaria

עַל־פִּ֨י יְהֹוָ֜ה פָּקַ֤ד אוֹתָם֙ בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁ֔ה אִ֥ישׁ אִ֛ישׁ עַל־עֲבֹדָת֖וֹ וְעַל־מַשָּׂא֑וֹ וּפְקֻדָ֕יו אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {פ}

The conclusion of the Levite census and the distribution of their duties reveal a highly precise and careful system directed entirely by God. Every individual was assigned a specific role, highlighting the profound order and responsibility required in the service of the Tabernacle. God Himself ordered the counting and the assignments, while Moses executed the actual appointments under His direct supervision To do this effectively, Moses applied his great wisdom to discern and perfectly match each person to the work they were most suited for [העמק דבר]. The divine direction in this process was unique to the Levites and did not apply to the census of the rest of the Israelites. This distinction hints at the special spiritual level of the Levites, whose duties were intimately connected to the attribute of strict justice, sacred song, and the physical guarding of the Sanctuary [רבנו בחיי].

The work of the Levites was divided into two distinct modes of operation. Their active service involved the holy duties performed while the camp remained stationary, whereas their burden referred to the physical transport of the Tabernacle's components during travel, with each Levite knowing in advance the exact weight he was responsible for carrying The division of these tasks was meticulously organized. Some explain that the assignments were distributed generally among the three main Levite families of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari Others, however, maintain that the appointments were deeply personal, with every single individual receiving a tailored assignment

From this rigorous division of labor emerges a fundamental principle regarding their service: a Levite was absolutely forbidden from performing the duties of his peer, or even assisting him. Each person was restricted exclusively to his own designated role, and any deviation was considered a severe transgression. This strict boundary is illustrated by a tradition warning that if a Levite from the family of gatekeepers attempted to help a peer from the family of singers close the Sanctuary doors, it was a strictly prohibited act

The final tally of the Levites carried specific conditions and profound significance. The census was strictly limited by age, ensuring that only those between thirty and fifty years old were counted and appointed to work, retiring once they passed that age Furthermore, the assignments required exact knowledge, meaning every Levite knew the precise names of the specific vessels he was entrusted to carry To manage this vast operation, supervisors were appointed through divine inspiration to oversee the Levites Ultimately, the meticulous nature of the count emphasizes that these were God's dedicated men, numbered solely for His sake and by His direct command [רש״ר הירש], with every single appointment carried out exactly as He had instructed Moses [רמב״ן, מזרחי].
