The preparation of the Ark of the Covenant for the Israelites' journeys through the wilderness required a meticulous process. A unique system of coverings was designed to both physically protect the sacred vessel and honor its supreme spiritual status. The priests first lowered the dividing curtain, using it as an initial screen over the Ark [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבי עזר]. Over this curtain, they placed a covering made of a specialized, durable animal skin, providing a strong, waterproof layer to guard against rain and desert dust [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Additionally, a precious cloth made entirely of blue wool was spread over the Ark [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The exact arrangement of these layers presents a fascinating contrast to the other sacred vessels of the Tabernacle. The primary approach among commentators is that, unlike the Menorah, the Table, and the altars—which always had their protective animal skin on the outside—the Ark's arrangement was reversed. The majestic blue cloth was spread over the animal skin, remaining visible to all [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך]. This distinction highlighted the Ark's unique elevation, making it fitting that its exterior resembled the pure, radiant heavens. This reversal also conveys a profound spiritual concept [העמק דבר]. The other vessels symbolize achievements that require natural human effort, and therefore their physical protection is displayed outwardly. The Ark, however, represents purely supernatural and spiritual guidance. Consequently, its glorious blue cloth was revealed for all to see, while its natural protection remained hidden beneath. Conversely, another perspective maintains that the covers followed a more practical order. The precious blue cloth was placed directly over the inner curtain, and the durable animal skin was layered on top of everything to shield the expensive fabrics from the harsh weather [אבן עזרא, רמב״ן, הטור הארוך].

Following the arrangement of the covers, the priests readied the carrying poles. This step raises a significant difficulty, as there was an explicit, permanent prohibition against ever removing the poles from the Ark's rings. How, then, could the priests be instructed to place them at this moment? Most commentators agree that this instruction does not mean inserting the poles anew, but rather adjusting, tightening, and securing them for the journey [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך, ביאור שטיינזלץ, בכור שור]. The poles were crafted to be thicker at their ends and thinner in the middle, allowing them to slide within the wide rings without ever slipping out entirely [פענח רזא, הכתב והקבלה]. While the Israelites were encamped, the poles were pushed to protrude from one side. As they prepared to travel, the priests centered the poles so they extended equally from both sides [העמק דבר, פענח רזא]. To ensure safety during the march, the poles featured special grooves that locked securely into the rings, preventing the heavy Ark from sliding and injuring the carriers while navigating steep inclines [חזקוני].

Other scholars offer different solutions to this contradiction. One approach suggests that the Ark actually had eight rings and four poles; two poles remained permanently fixed to fulfill the prohibition, while two additional poles were inserted exclusively for travel [חזקוני, ברכת אשר על התורה]. Another view argues that momentarily removing the poles strictly for the purpose of arranging the covers did not violate the prohibition [ברכת אשר על התורה]. Finally, some suggest that the instruction to ready the poles actually refers to resting them upon the shoulders of the Levites who carried the Ark [אבן עזרא, הטור הארוך, חזקוני]. Yet, this interpretation is challenged by others, who point out that the designated Levites were strictly forbidden from even approaching the Ark until the priests had completely finished the covering process [הכתב והקבלה, ברכת אשר על התורה].
