The natural world exists in a state of absolute awe before its Creator. From the ground to the highest peaks, the physical universe reacts intensely to God's presence, reflecting His infinite power and total control over everything He has made. Unlike human beings who might sometimes fear the things they themselves have built, the natural world trembles before the One who formed it [מצודת דוד]. This reaction is much like that of a servant who shakes with anxiety the moment he notices his master's strict gaze [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון]. God does not even need to make physical contact with the earth to cause this reaction; His careful watch and providence over the world are enough to make the ground shake and cause the mountains to burst into flames and smoke [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי].
Another perspective views this natural upheaval as an expression of God's potential power. Although He constantly sustains the earth and ensures it remains stable, if He ever wished to do so, a mere glance or touch from Him would instantly cause the ground to quake and the mountains to burn [אבן עזרא].
Beyond the literal forces of nature, these dramatic events also serve as symbols of divine justice. Earthquakes and fiery mountains represent the destruction that comes to punish wicked individuals and corrupt nations. Yet, even during times of severe judgment, God carefully protects those who respect Him. His ultimate desire is for the world and its creatures to exist and thrive, not to be destroyed [מלבי״ם, מאירי]. In this context, the trembling landscape acts as a social metaphor. The shaking earth represents the general population, while the smoking mountains symbolize powerful kings and ruling governments [אבן עזרא, מאירי].
The image of smoking mountains also carries a deep spiritual memory, recalling the moment God revealed Himself at Mount Sinai in fire and smoke [רש״י, אלשיך]. This connection highlights the current spiritual state of the world. Right now, because the earth is filled with impurity, it can only tremble from a distance when God looks upon it. However, in the future, when the world is finally cleansed and purified, the Divine Presence will be able to rest upon it directly. At that time, a holy smoke will rise from the mountains once again, mirroring the sacred revelation at Sinai [אלשיך].
