Psalms 109:22Sefaria

Human vulnerability reaches its peak when external hardships seep deep into the soul. A state of poverty and neediness represents a person who is entirely broken, humiliated, and relentlessly pursued by enemies This destitution is felt with agonizing intensity by someone who once lived a life of wealth and comfort, only to be reduced to a state of exile with absolutely nothing [אלשיך].

Such extreme distress leads to a total internal collapse, an active devastation rather than just a passive feeling of sadness The primary approach among commentators understands this blow as actual death. The heart is killed from within by overwhelming fear, grief, and trouble. Because the heart is the source of life for the entire body, a person in this condition is not just symbolically dead, but is considered truly lifeless Conversely, another perspective understands this internal collapse as a profound hollowing out. The heart is completely emptied, drained of all feelings of vitality, security, and strength

Stepping beyond the physical and emotional pain, an additional layer of meaning addresses the spiritual and moral standing of King David. One approach suggests that David achieved the monumental task of killing his own evil inclination. His heart was left entirely empty of negative desires and was governed solely by his good inclination. According to this view, David's well-known sin did not stem from an internal moral failure or a weakness to temptation. Rather, the event was orchestrated by God to provide a timeless example of repentance for any individual who sins. However, a differing viewpoint rejects the notion that David destroyed his evil inclination. Instead, this perspective maintains that the focus is not on his elevated spiritual rank, but simply serves as a profound expression of the deep sorrow and agonizing pain he carries [תורה תמימה].
