דניאל, פרק ה׳, פסוק כ״ב

Daniel 5:22Sefaria

Daniel confronts King Belshazzar with a piercing rebuke, focusing on a tragedy of ignored history. The core of the accusation is not merely the king's wrongful actions, but his blatant disregard for the clear lessons of the past. Unlike those who do wrong out of ignorance, Belshazzar chose to rebel against God despite being fully aware of his family's history.

The primary approach among commentators is that the climax of his guilt lies in his deliberate refusal to humble himself. Belshazzar knew exactly what had happened to his predecessor, Nebuchadnezzar. He was fully aware of the severe punishment Nebuchadnezzar endured until he finally recognized God's ultimate authority. While the father learned his lesson and submitted, the son, knowing all of this, chose to ignore the warning and showed no reverence for God.

The severity of the king's actions goes beyond a simple lack of humility. He actively elevated himself in pride, behaving as though he had conquered God. By desecrating the sacred vessels of the Temple and choosing to praise lifeless idols of silver and gold, he openly insulted the very Creator who held his life and destiny in His hands [מלבי״ם].

This deliberate rebellion explains why Belshazzar faced such immediate and harsh retribution, especially when other foreign rulers often anger God without facing instant consequences. The explanation for this swift justice involves two factors. First, while other kings might act out of genuine ignorance of God's greatness, Belshazzar knew the truth, which significantly amplified his guilt. Second, the Babylonian empire did not achieve its vast power through natural political means; its dominance was a direct gift from God to Nebuchadnezzar. Because of this unique status, the Babylonian dynasty was not judged by the standard rules applied to other nations, but was held to a much stricter level of divine scrutiny. As the heir to this empire, Belshazzar should have realized that just as God held his father accountable for his sins, He would certainly hold him accountable as well [אלשיך].
