Daniel 6:6Sefaria

אֱ֠דַ֠יִן גֻּבְרַיָּ֤א אִלֵּךְ֙ אָֽמְרִ֔ין דִּ֣י לָ֧א נְהַשְׁכַּ֛ח לְדָנִיֵּ֥אל דְּנָ֖ה כׇּל־עִלָּ֑ה לָהֵ֕ן הַשְׁכַּ֥חְנָֽא עֲל֖וֹהִי בְּדָ֥ת אֱלָהֵֽהּ׃ {ס}

Daniel’s flawless administration of state affairs leaves his political rivals deeply frustrated. Initially, the royal ministers preferred to uncover a flaw in his political conduct. A failure in his official duties would immediately ruin his standing with the king, and if he were guilty of political betrayal or embezzlement, God might not intervene to protect him [אלשיך]. However, Daniel's absolute integrity yields no such opportunity. Realizing that his loyalty to the state is airtight, the ministers are forced to change their strategy. They decide to weaponize his greatest strength—his uncompromising devotion to his faith—understanding that any pretext for his arrest must be rooted in his religious laws and customs [אבן עזרא].

To frame him successfully, the ministers decide to initiate a new royal decree that directly contradicts the laws of Israel [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They know perfectly well that Daniel will never abandon his religious duties, even if it means violating a direct order from the king [מצודת דוד]. This creates an inescapable trap. If Daniel compromises his faith to obey the king, he will lose God's divine protection and ultimately fail. If, on the other hand, he remains faithful to God and defies the royal decree, he will face execution [יוסף אבן יחיא].

The ministers are so confident in this scheme that they speak of finding their pretext as if it has already happened. Because the religious trap is so simple and guaranteed to work, they consider his downfall an accomplished fact even before the plan is fully set in motion. In a striking twist of irony, the very same unwavering loyalty that protected Daniel from political scandal guarantees the success of their new plot. The ministers know with absolute certainty that he will continue to pray to God without fear, walking willingly right into their net [אלשיך].
