יחזקאל, פרק ל״ב, פסוק י״ז

Ezekiel 32:17Sefaria

Prophetic visions often carry layers of meaning, where a message concerning a neighboring empire actually conceals secrets about the final stages of human history. A precise timeline marks the arrival of this revelation, placing it in the twelfth year of King Zedekiah's reign—exactly one year after the destruction of the Temple [מצודת דוד]. While the message notes the fifteenth day of the month without naming the month itself, it builds directly on a previous vision given in the twelfth month. This places the current events exactly two weeks after the preceding revelation [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל].

On the surface, the message appears to be simply another lamentation over the fall of Egypt [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל]. However, it actually contains a profound and hidden vision concerning the End of Days and the apocalyptic era of Gog and Magog [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators links the collapse of Egypt to a global religious conflict that will precede the final redemption, though perspectives differ on how these events will unfold.

One approach outlines a scenario where, before the redemption, Christian nations from the West will launch a campaign of conquest, capturing the land of Israel and devastating Egypt. These actions will trigger intense religious dread and jealousy among the Islamic nations of the East and North, who will fear the spread of Christian power and resent their control over Jerusalem. Consequently, massive Islamic armies will gather to wage a bloody war against the Christian forces near Jerusalem. This clash serves as a historic, divine punishment. God orchestrates events so that the descendants of those who destroyed both the First and Second Temples meet their ultimate demise on the very holy soil where their ancestors sinned [אברבנאל].

An alternative approach agrees that this is a vision of the End of Days, but envisions the conflict occurring after the people of Israel have already returned to live in their homeland. In this sequence of events, the Christian and Islamic nations will initially form an alliance, launching a joint military campaign to take the land away from Israel. Yet, as soon as they arrive, God will cast a deep confusion upon them. Their profound religious differences will rise to the surface, causing the alliance to shatter. They will turn their weapons against one another, leading to mutual annihilation. This catastrophic downfall of nations will begin in Egypt, due to its proximity to Israel, eventually dragging all the warring factions into total destruction [מלבי״ם].
