יחזקאל, פרק ל״ד, פסוק ל״א

Ezekiel 34:31Sefaria

וְאַתֵּ֥ן צֹאנִ֛י צֹ֥אן מַרְעִיתִ֖י אָדָ֣ם אַתֶּ֑ם אֲנִי֙ אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה׃ {פ}

The relationship between God and the Israelites is frequently compared to the bond between a shepherd and his flock. However, this imagery runs the risk of portraying the people as a lowly, passive herd entirely dominated by its owner. To prevent this misunderstanding, the conclusion of the prophecy refines the exact nature of this connection, elevating the Israelites from mindless subjects to a dignified human level.

The primary approach among commentators focuses on the sharp contrast between the metaphor of the flock and the reality of the people's worth. Although God refers to them as His flock, He immediately clarifies their human status. Unlike ordinary sheep that are managed purely for economic gain [ביאור שטיינזלץ], the Israelites are not viewed as animals in God's eyes. Instead, they are deeply valued and important human beings [רש"י, מצודת דוד]. It is precisely because of this profound respect for their humanity that God attaches His name to them, declaring Himself their God—an intimate bond He would never form if He considered them mere beasts [מצודת דוד].

Building upon this, another perspective conditions the very right to be called human on spiritual and moral conduct. A person who is consumed by the material desires of the world is fundamentally no different from an animal, as both share the same physical existence. The true title of a human being is only fully realized when the people are guided by intellect and understanding, loving God and serving Him with a complete heart. It is only when this spiritual and thoughtful nature is apparent that people truly distinguish themselves from animals and earn their human dignity [רד"ק].

From a different moral standpoint, blending the imagery of dependent sheep with the elevated status of humanity serves as a profound call for humility. Even when individuals reach great spiritual heights and recognize their human potential, they must remain humble, viewing themselves as dependent and submissive as a flock. It is exactly through this delicate balance of human greatness and genuine inner humility that God chooses to dwell among them, fulfilling His promise to be their God [חומת אנך].
