יחזקאל, פרק ל״ו, פסוק י״ג

Ezekiel 36:13Sefaria

A long history of destruction and exile has created a tragic reputation in the eyes of the world. The prophetic message speaks directly to the mountains and the physical land itself [רד״ק], which bear the brunt of the surrounding nations' mockery. The primary approach among commentators is that these nations view the territory as a place that naturally consumes its inhabitants, constantly destroying those who try to settle there. This accusation is built on historical precedent. First, the original Canaanite nations were wiped out, and later, the Israelites who replaced them suffered the exact same fate [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The repeating claims against the land emphasize its established pattern of bringing ruin to the populations living within its borders [מצודת דוד].

Looking closer at the accusations, a distinction is made between the loss of individuals and the destruction of entire populations. The idea that the land devours individuals refers to the period of exile, a time when the harsh environment destroys the few residents who remain through disease, starvation, and plague. Meanwhile, the broader accusation of wiping out entire nations points to the past. It describes how the land, acting like a grieving mother, lost and expelled the people of Israel on two separate occasions [מלבי״ם].

Taking a completely different approach, another perspective shifts the focus away from the physical land and directs it toward the people of Israel suffering in exile. In this view, the accusation of consuming human life refers to the cruel and entirely false blood libels leveled against the Jews. These were vicious claims that Jews secretly killed gentiles to use their blood during the Passover holiday. The accompanying claim of destroying nations represents the false accusation that the Jewish people actively harm the host countries where they reside. In response to these terrible lies, the prophecy delivers a promise that God will avenge His people and permanently erase this deep shame and falsehood [אברבנאל].
