In the midst of King Josiah's intense campaign to purify the land and uproot idolatry, a single, unique grave caught his attention. The king noticed a specific marker or monument built over a burial site to identify it [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Commentators offer different perspectives on why this particular grave stood out. One approach suggests that Josiah saw an unusually massive monument that clearly dwarfed the surrounding graves [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. This prominent structure was no accident. The old prophet from Bethel had intentionally instructed his sons to build a large marker. Knowing that a prophecy of destruction would eventually be fulfilled, with Josiah unearthing bones to burn them, the old prophet wanted to ensure his grave was easily recognizable. He understood that if the site was clearly marked, the bones of a true prophet would be left untouched [רד״ק].

Alternatively, the king's attention was drawn by a miraculous sight. He saw a grave where thorns and thistles grew on one side, while fragrant myrtles and spices flourished on the other. This striking visual contrast reflected the opposite natures of the two men buried within: the righteous true prophet, and the wicked false prophet who had specifically commanded his sons to bury him beside the holy man [רש״י, רד״ק].

When the king asked about the site, the local townspeople explained that it was the resting place of the man of God who had long ago predicted the exact actions Josiah was now carrying out [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It is remarkable that the locals could identify the inhabitants of the grave, considering more than three hundred and fifty years had passed since the burial. This historical knowledge was preserved through a strong oral tradition, faithfully passed down from father to son throughout the generations [רד״ק].
