A monumental public ceremony marks the peak of a renewed covenant between the nation and God. Led by the king, this historic event goes far beyond a simple reading of the Torah. It represents a profound, practical, and internal recommitment by the entire nation to uphold God's commandments for all future generations.

At the start of the gathering, the king takes his place at a specific pillar. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to a special elevated platform within the Temple, specifically designated for the king during national gatherings, much like his traditional place during the public Torah reading ceremony [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others see a deeper symbolic meaning in his location, suggesting he stood beside the Temple's right pillar, known as Jachin. This specific placement highlights the spiritual repair achieved by the righteous king, who brought holiness back to a Temple that earlier, wicked kings had defiled [אהבת יהונתן].

The king's pledge is to establish the words of the covenant, bringing them from mere potential into active reality by practically fulfilling everything written in the book [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This agreement includes observing laws, general commandments, and testimonies. These testimonies are specific practices that bear witness to historical miracles or core beliefs, such as eating matzah to remember the Exodus from Egypt, or observing the Sabbath as a declaration of absolute trust in God [אהבת יהונתן].

Following the king's lead, the entire nation stands together in the covenant. This standing is not merely a physical posture, but an expression of deep internal resolve.
