I Kings 11:11Sefaria

A harsh divine declaration marks the breaking point of Solomon’s reign. After years of prosperity and building, a severe consequence arrives for breaking the covenant, carrying the heavy penalty of a divided kingdom. The primary approach among commentators is that God delivered this message through a prophet, specifically Ahijah the Shilonite [רד״ק]. However, another perspective suggests that the decree was communicated to the king through a direct revelation [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The root of this severe judgment lies in the nature of the king's actions. One approach emphasizes Solomon’s profound awareness of his wrongdoing, noting that he knew very well he was intentionally violating God's commandments [רש״י]. Conversely, another view explains that the grievance against Solomon is not necessarily that he actively engaged in idol worship himself. Rather, his failure was passive; he allowed paganism to exist within his domain and in Jerusalem, neglecting the covenantal obligation to eradicate idolatry [מלבי״ם].

The resulting punishment operates on a principle of measure for measure, wherein the kingdom will be torn away and given to one of Solomon's own servants [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because the people worshipped the host of heaven—entities that are essentially God's servants—they effectively removed the crown from the Creator. In direct response, God removes the crown from Solomon and hands it to his servant [מלבי״ם]. Although this decree is finalized immediately, with a prophet actively designating ten tribes for the servant, the physical division of the kingdom is delayed. The actual tearing apart of the nation will not occur during Solomon’s lifetime, but only after his death [מלבי״ם].
