I Kings 11:22Sefaria

The exchange between the Egyptian ruler and the exiled Edomite prince highlights a sharp contrast between a life of luxury and an intense drive to return home for vengeance. Pharaoh struggles to understand why Hadad would willingly abandon the comforts of the Egyptian royal court. He questions what could possibly be missing from Hadad's life, pointing out that the prince currently enjoys the absolute best conditions [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Pharaoh compares the prosperity of Egypt to the reality of Hadad's homeland, wondering why anyone would choose to go back to a place that is far less developed, magnificent, and fertile [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Despite the logic of Pharaoh's argument, Hadad firmly rejects the offer to stay. He insists on returning to his land at any cost [אברבנאל]. Yielding to this stubborn demand, Pharaoh allows him to leave for Edom, where Hadad begins to lay the groundwork for his future reign. At this time, Edom is still under Solomon's control, but the rule is not oppressive. Because Solomon does not view Hadad's return as a significant threat, the returning prince is able to gradually build and expand his power [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This sequence of events reveals the deep-seated grudge Hadad carried against Solomon since the death of David, driven by a desire to take revenge on Israel. Yet, despite his intentions, Hadad is unable to act on his plans for many years. God actively prevents him from causing any harm to Solomon, ensuring the king's safety as long as he walks on the right path and faithfully observes God's commandments and laws [אברבנאל].
