Open confrontation with a reigning monarch inevitably leads to mortal danger, often forcing a rebel to seek asylum across borders. When Solomon sought to put Jeroboam to death, commentators offer different perspectives on the exact cause of this severe reaction. Some suggest that Jeroboam organized an actual, physical rebellion against the king [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. Others argue that he did not lead a full uprising, but rather spoke harsh, defiant words directly against Solomon [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This defiance was rooted in pride, as Jeroboam felt emboldened by the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite promising him the throne. His behavior stood in sharp contrast to King David, who maintained deep respect for King Saul and refused to harm him, even after being anointed to take his place [רלב״ג].

Faced with an immediate threat to his life, Jeroboam was forced to run away. This flight revealed a limitation in his spiritual standing. He was not on a high enough spiritual level to merit direct, miraculous protection from God, and therefore had to rely entirely on natural methods to save himself [רלב״ג].

His choice to flee specifically to Shishak, the king of Egypt, was a calculated political move. The primary approach among commentators is that Shishak was not the same Pharaoh whose daughter Solomon had married. That Pharaoh, Solomon's father-in-law, had already died, and a new ruler had taken power [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. It is even possible that Shishak did not belong to the native Egyptian royal line at all, but rather came from a Cushite dynasty that had taken control [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This shift in power worked to Jeroboam's advantage. Because Shishak had no family ties to Solomon [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and was a known enemy of the House of David [מלבי״ם, רד״ק], he was willing to offer protection. This new political reality provided Jeroboam with a secure refuge in Egypt, where he remained safely hidden until Solomon died.
