I Kings 11:42Sefaria

The conclusion of King Solomon's reign marks the end of an era defined by unprecedented perfection, profound peace, and unmatched splendor, which ultimately faded into a tragic decline. His rule stands as a unique chapter in history, characterized by absolute unity and stability across the entire nation.

The significance of his continuous rule from Jerusalem over the entire nation is understood in two primary ways. One approach draws a historical contrast with his father, David. While both kings reigned for forty years, David's rule was initially fractured; he spent his first seven years in Hebron governing only the tribe of Judah before eventually moving to Jerusalem to lead the whole nation. Solomon, however, led a fully united kingdom from the capital city for the entirety of his forty-year reign [מלבי״ם].

Another perspective views his stationary rule as the ultimate proof of his absolute power and tranquility. Most ancient kings were forced to travel constantly throughout their lands to conquer territories and crush uprisings. Solomon, by contrast, sat securely in his capital, governing the land without challenge, as no one dared to defy his authority. Some suggest that the forty years specifically measure this unique period of absolute peace in Jerusalem, distinct from other times when he faced hardships and rebels [אברבנאל].

Looking at his reign as a whole, Solomon was granted three extraordinary gifts in his youth that no person possessed before or since. He was given deep, divine wisdom rooted in the fear of God. He held immense power and authority, causing enemies and foreign kings to submit to him without a single battle. Finally, he enjoyed unimaginable wealth and honor that provided him with supreme royal majesty.

Yet, as he grew older and allowed his wives to turn his heart away from God, these three gifts were entirely stripped away. His wisdom failed him when he submitted to their influence and could no longer foresee the consequences of his actions. His great power vanished as ordinary servants rose up as rebels against him. His vast wealth dried up, forcing him to place a crushing tax burden on the people, which eventually sparked Jeroboam's rebellion. This dramatic shift reveals that Solomon's remarkable abilities were not permanent, natural traits, but direct results of God's providence. The moment he strayed from the right path and severed his connection with God, his wisdom, strength, and wealth immediately left him [אברבנאל].
