Isaiah 28:25Sefaria

Agricultural work serves as a profound metaphor for God's providence and His methods of human correction. A farmer does not spend all his time breaking the earth; the grueling work of turning the soil is never an end in itself, but rather an essential preparation for new growth. Once the farmer finishes breaking the hard clods of earth and leveling the field, he immediately transitions to planting Every type of seed requires a different approach and a precise location to thrive. He begins by scattering delicate spices, such as thin black cumin, which require exceptionally fine and soft soil

Next, the farmer tends to the primary crop of wheat. The primary approach among commentators is that wheat is planted with careful precision, measured exactly for its designated spot Others suggest it is sown in straight rows [שד״ל] or represents a specific single-row variety [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because wheat is the most vital crop, it is often given a place of prominence in the center of the field [רש״י], though another tradition identifies this central crop as oats [מנחת שי]. The remaining grains are then arranged carefully. Barley is sown in its own marked area [רד״ק, שד״ל], often forming a ring around the wheat [רש״י, מצודת דוד], with some identifying this surrounding grain as rye [מנחת שי]. Finally, spelt is planted along the outer borders of the field

This detailed farming process mirrors a deep spiritual reality. The act of plowing represents human suffering and the harsh rebukes delivered by the prophets. Just as the farmer does not plow merely for the sake of plowing, God does not bring hardship upon people as an ultimate goal. The purpose of this spiritual plowing is to level the ground, preparing human hearts for repentance and the correction of their actions

Furthermore, the varied methods of planting reflect God's individualized providence. While the hardships of exile and suffering may affect an entire nation equally, much like a plow turning a whole field, the subsequent planting of spiritual guidance, prophecy, and Torah study is uniquely tailored to each person. Those who are wise and spiritually prepared require only subtle hints to grasp profound truths, whereas others need repetition, simple explanations, and stories to fully absorb the message [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, God guides each individual toward their own specific path of repentance, matching His guidance to their unique character and past mistakes, exactly as a master farmer adapts his planting methods for every distinct type of seed [מצודת דוד].
