Jeremiah 44:1Sefaria

The remnant of Judah fled to Egypt searching for a safe haven, but their physical relocation masked a deep spiritual crisis. A harsh prophecy confronts this scattered community, exposing the true motives behind their migration and the destructive consequences of their actions. The message is directed at those who settled across various specific locations and regions within Egypt Among these settlements is the country of Pathros, which is identified specifically as Upper Egypt, located in the southern part of the nation [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary purpose of this prophecy is to challenge the people regarding their choices. It becomes clear that their journey to Egypt was not driven solely by a fear of the Chaldeans. Instead, it stemmed from a much more severe motive: a desire to engage in idol worship and to blend in with the local Egyptian population. The people operated under the false assumption that once they were outside the borders of their own land, they would be free to worship idols without facing any divine punishment [אברבנאל].

This message sharply rebukes the people for their spiritual blindness. They had witnessed the complete destruction of Jerusalem and the cities of Judah with their own eyes, a tragedy that occurred entirely because of these exact same sins. Despite seeing this devastation, they absorbed no moral lesson and refused to repent. God makes it absolutely clear that their stubborn determination to continue angering Him through idol worship on Egyptian soil will not bring them the security they seek. Instead, it will result in their complete destruction by sword and famine, ensuring that not a single survivor will remain to ever return to the land of Judah [אברבנאל].
