ירמיהו, פרק מ״ד, פסוק ט״ז

Jeremiah 44:16Sefaria

The confrontation between the prophet and the people reveals a deep clash of historical and religious perspectives. The people issue a direct and blunt refusal to change their ways. However, this defiance does not stem from a denial of the prophet's truth. They do not doubt the authenticity of his message; they simply have no desire to obey him [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

At the heart of their refusal is a fundamental disagreement about the cause of their recent destruction. They completely reject the claim that their idol worship brought disaster upon them. From their perspective, reality proved the exact opposite. They argue that during the times they actively engaged in foreign worship, they enjoyed immense prosperity and abundance. Conversely, ruin and tragedy only struck when they abandoned these practices, listened to the prophets, and focused solely on worshiping God.

Furthermore, their religious worldview sees no contradiction between honoring God and participating in these rituals. They do not worship the Queen of Heaven as an independent deity. Instead, they maintain their full belief in God, His divine providence, and His prophets. They treat the burning of incense to the Queen of Heaven as a purely practical effort. It is viewed as a functional tool designed to draw down physical blessings, such as rain and healthy crops, from the stars and constellations. Because they see this ritual merely as a way to secure their livelihood, they firmly believe they can continue performing it while remaining entirely loyal and righteous in the eyes of God [מלבי״ם].
