ירמיהו, פרק ו׳, פסוק י״ב

Jeremiah 6:12Sefaria

The impending destruction will be absolute and unprecedented, completely uprooting every familiar social, economic, and family structure. Private property, including homes and fields, as well as families, will be entirely stripped away from their original owners and transferred to strangers, leaving no trace of the lives that once existed.

Under normal circumstances, when a person is taken captive, society maintains a basic safety net. A court appoints someone to oversee their assets, relatives manage the fields and eat the produce, and a wife waits for her husband's return. However, this disaster will be so extreme that it shatters these standard protections. There will be no heirs left to claim anything, and all possessions and loved ones will fall directly and immediately into enemy hands [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, this total loss of property, land, and family will not happen gradually. It will occur all at once, in a single devastating sweep [מצודת דוד].

The reason for this absolute ruin is a direct action from God, which is understood in different ways. It represents a severe, crushing blow that God will strike against the people [מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, it serves as a clear signal from God, commanding the inhabitants to abandon their land and go into exile [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, this divine strike will cause the entire population to fall simultaneously. The devastation will be so complete that absolutely no one will remain behind to protect their heritage or their family [מלבי״ם].
