God's protection of the Israelites extends far beyond the physical battlefield, as He also steps in to stop spiritual and verbal threats. Balak, the king of Moab, attempted to wage a unique kind of war against the nation. Rather than using conventional weapons, he sought to attack them through the mouth of Balaam [מצודת דוד].
However, God completely reversed the malicious intentions of these enemies, transforming a planned curse into a blessing. He refused to listen to Balaam or grant his request, actively preventing him from carrying out his plan to curse the people [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead of allowing the intended harm, God caused Balaam to explicitly bless the Israelites [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
By stopping this verbal attack, God rescued the Israelites from the hands of Balak. Thwarting the curse was a complete victory over this unconventional method of warfare, saving the nation just as surely as if they had survived a physical conflict [מלבי״ם].
