Joshua 24:3Sefaria

Divine providence selected Abraham to establish a new nation, a profound process requiring him to leave his past behind, undergo spiritual growth, and refine his family line. This journey involved two main preparations: readying the proper environment and producing the rightful heir.

God brought Abraham away from his homeland out of kindness, distancing him from the false beliefs held by his father and brothers [מצודת דוד]. Because Abraham originated from across the eastern river, he earned the title of the Hebrew [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This relocation is compared to a gardener carefully uprooting a high-quality plant from poor dirt and replanting it in rich, fertile soil [מלבי״ם]. The journey was not merely physical but deeply spiritual. As Abraham drew closer to Him, he received a holy soul, elevating him from his original state as Abram to the complete, perfected level of Abraham [אלשיך].

God then led him throughout Canaan. Wandering the land introduced Abraham to a holy environment suited for prophecy and the resting of the Divine Presence Practically, this journey acted as a symbolic conquest. By walking its length and breadth, Abraham established a legal claim to the land for his descendants This legal possession proves that Abraham held the status of an Israelite, ensuring his children had an absolute right to inherit the territory. Reminding the Israelites of this guaranteed inheritance removed any fear that they might lose their home, freeing them to choose to serve God out of genuine free will rather than anxiety [חומת אנך].

Before Abraham could have a child, God tested and refined him through various trials and hardships. The primary approach among commentators [רש״י, מנחת שי, רד״ק] notes that the scriptural phrasing subtly hints at these struggles. Eventually, the promise to multiply his descendants was initially fulfilled through the birth of Ishmael [מצודת דוד]. However, Isaac is highlighted as the true, chosen heir meant to continue the legacy The commentators [מלבי״ם, אלשיך] explain that Ishmael's birth prior to Abraham's circumcision was a necessary step of spiritual purification. Ishmael absorbed the spiritual impurities and flaws inherent in human nature. With this dross removed, Isaac could later be born in a state of complete holiness, much like pure gold refined from its dregs.
