Joshua 8:14Sefaria

Blinded by overconfidence and a false sense of security, the king of Ai spots the Israelite camp and makes a fatal miscalculation. Attempting a clever maneuver, he rushes his army out for an early surprise attack. He assumes the Israelites are resting unguarded, completely unaware that he is marching directly into a carefully designed ambush Rather than waiting for the approaching Israelites to reach the city gates, the king and his men hurry down into the valley to meet them. Their goal is to recreate the conditions of their previous victory, which also took place in this lower terrain [מלבי״ם].

The timing of this attack was based on a prearranged schedule The primary approach among commentators is that the king deliberately launched his assault at the exact same hour as his previous successful battle. He intended to boost his soldiers' morale, instilling the belief that they would secure another victory just as they had before Some note that the king and his advisors determined this specific hour the previous day through astrology and divination [רש״י]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that the precise timing was entirely Joshua's doing. He coordinated a strict schedule with his hidden forces to ensure that all Israelite units would strike in perfect harmony [מלבי״ם].

The battle unfolds on the plain located just outside the city [רד״ק], along the road heading east toward the plains of Jericho [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. The king's choice of location is driven by a tactical constraint. Because the Israelite camp surrounds Ai from the north and west, the city's army is forced to move eastward into the plain to avoid being encircled. Joshua has anticipated this exact movement and planned his strategy around it [מלבי״ם].

This specific terrain proves to be a fatal vulnerability for the king. Down on the plain, his line of sight is restricted, preventing him from seeing the forces waiting behind the city [רלב״ג]. Completely blind to the main ambush of thirty thousand warriors positioned at his rear, the king falls right into the net, regardless of how closely he watches the troops in plain view [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the strategic deception works with devastating ease. The moment the men of Ai look back and see smoke rising from their conquered city, their will to fight is completely broken, leading to their swift defeat [רלב״ג].
