Judges 5:18Sefaria

While several tribes chose to stand on the sidelines and avoid the impending conflict, the narrative shifts to honor those who carried the heaviest burden of the battle. Despite being heavily outnumbered, these warriors led the nation to a brilliant victory The tribe of Zebulun is celebrated first for their astonishing disregard for their own safety. They treated their own lives with a sense of scorn, completely abandoning themselves to the cause without giving any weight to the fatal danger standing right in front of them They charged into the fight driven by rare courage, a fierce desire to avenge themselves upon the enemy, and an absolute trust in God [רלב״ג, אברבנאל]. More than just fulfilling an obligation, they threw themselves into harm's way out of a genuine passion and eagerness to fight [רד״ק].

The tribe of Naphtali stood shoulder to shoulder with Zebulun, displaying the exact same level of bravery and self-sacrifice Their shared courage was further highlighted by the specific location of the clash. The primary approach among commentators is that the battle took place on the elevated heights of Mount Tabor and its surrounding fields. Choosing to fight in such a high, exposed area is a testament to their fearlessness. Instead of seeking shelter or hiding from the enemy, they positioned themselves out in the open, confronting the threat directly and boldly [אלשיך].

God had previously commanded that the men of Zebulun and Naphtali be taken into this specific war. Yet, they are praised not just for participating, but for the fearless and passionate way they carried out His mission. This glowing praise serves a dual purpose: it honors their dedication while sharply amplifying the criticism against the rest of the tribes. The others should have stepped forward voluntarily to help God, but instead, they chose to slip away and avoid the struggle Because of their profound dedication and fearless hearts, Zebulun and Naphtali secured eternal glory [רד״ק].
