Leviticus 11:42Sefaria

The dietary laws regarding swarming creatures encompass the entire spectrum of life that creeps along the earth. The instructions are formulated with extreme precision, categorizing these animals by their method of movement to ensure that absolutely no species escapes the prohibition. The first category includes creatures that propel themselves forward on their bellies without the use of legs, such as snakes This group also incorporates earthworms commonly found in soil and refuse, particularly during the summer months following heavy rains Additionally, the prohibition extends to creatures that possess tiny, nearly invisible legs, causing them to appear as though they are rolling or sliding on their bellies

The next category covers small creatures that walk on four legs, such as black beetles and scorpions Although a scorpion possesses eight legs, commentators explain that the restriction applies to creatures relying on at least four legs for movement [ברכת אשר], or to those whose upper appendages are not used for walking, leaving them to rely primarily on four legs for mobility [מזרחי]. Beyond this, the ban expands to multi-legged creatures like centipedes, which have numerous legs running down both sides of their bodies from head to tail The inclusive nature of these guidelines guarantees that any creature with more than four legs, whether its anatomy is standard or highly unusual, is strictly forbidden

The restriction against creatures swarming on the earth also applies to worms found in the roots of trees, including olive trees, because the root system is considered an extension of the ground itself From a practical standpoint, the primary approach among commentators is that insects forming from decay within detached, harvested food are not forbidden as long as they never crawl out onto the ground. However, tiny insects and worms that develop inside fruits and seeds while the plant is still attached to the soil are strictly prohibited Because of this, great care is required when checking items like flour and dried fruits. An intact insect is considered a complete, independent entity that cannot be canceled out or ignored, even if it is accidentally mixed into a quantity of food a thousand times its size

These swarming creatures are classified as repulsive and must be avoided entirely [שטיינזלץ]. However, the restriction is limited solely to consumption; a person is permitted to derive other practical benefits from them [רלב"ג]. On a moral and conceptual level, the imagery of creatures swarming low to the ground is compared to blind chicks that have not yet opened their eyes. This serves as a metaphor for people whose intellectual and spiritual eyes remain closed. Such individuals are completely consumed by the endless pursuit of material wealth and earthly desires, giving no thought to their spiritual nourishment or their true purpose in life Finally, the prohibition carries a severe warning regarding the education of the next generation. Adults are absolutely forbidden from directly feeding these creatures to young children, even though the children themselves are not yet old enough to be obligated in the Commandments
