Preparing the sacred objects of the Tabernacle for travel through the harsh desert required immense care, but the golden Menorah demanded a completely unique approach. Because of its specific size and structure, packing and transporting the Menorah required special equipment distinct from the other holy items.
Unlike the Ark of the Covenant or the Table, which simply had coverings spread over them, the Menorah was actually placed inside a specifically designed container. Rather than a flat sheet of leather, this cover was a hollow receptacle [שפתי חכמים, ברטנורא, משכיל לדוד, לבוש האורה]. It was sewn together to form a large leather sack, much like the heavy bags merchants used to pack goods and spices [רש״י, מזרחי]. Although constructed as a sack, its primary purpose was to serve as a protective cover, shielding the delicate branches from damage during the journey [גור אריה]. This custom-made pouch was crafted exclusively for the Menorah and was completely separate from the large leather sheets that covered the roof of the Tabernacle [מזרחי].
Once secured inside its leather pouch, the Menorah was ready to be lifted. Because the Menorah was not built with attached rings to hold permanent carrying poles, it had to be transported using a separate, external pole [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
Exactly how the Menorah was positioned on this pole is a matter of careful discussion. One approach suggests that the leather sack was suspended underneath a single pole carried by two Levites, hanging from a hook or a rope, similar to how a heavy cluster of grapes is carried [שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, others argue that the Menorah had to be placed directly on top of the pole. Because the Menorah was exceptionally tall, hanging it underneath would have caused it to drag along the ground, risking severe damage [הדר זקנים]. Another perspective offers that the poles were simply placed alongside the wrapped Menorah, allowing it to be hoisted onto the shoulders like a standard heavy load [רשב״ם].
Only after the Menorah was securely packed inside its protective leather sack and properly arranged on its carrying pole was the preparation fully complete. At that point, the Levites were finally permitted to step forward and carry the sacred object into the desert [ספורנו].
