פרשת במדבר

Numbers 4:17Sefaria

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

The dismantling of the Tabernacle required immense care, especially regarding the most sacred objects. The instructions for this process involve a severe warning emphasizing the heavy responsibility the priests held toward the family of Kohath, who were tasked with carrying these holy items. Moses and Aaron receive these directions together because Aaron and his sons are given an active duty to strictly supervise the Kohathites. They must ensure these carriers do not make a fatal error that would result in the severe punishment of being cut off [אבן עזרא].

This directive adds a new layer of caution to previous instructions. Earlier, the rule established that the Kohathites could only carry the sacred vessels after they were fully wrapped, preventing any physical contact. Now, the requirement goes further. The carriers must not even be present to witness the packing process, and they are forbidden from seeing the vessels as they are being covered. The purpose of this strict separation is to ensure that the holy objects remain a purely spiritual and conceptual reality in the minds of those carrying them, rather than becoming ordinary objects of sensory experience. Looking at the physical vessels while they are being wrapped could distract the carriers from the profound spiritual ideas these items represent. Such a physical gaze might damage their understanding of the objects' deeper meaning, ultimately profaning the sacred vessels in their eyes [רש ר הירש].
