Numbers 4:32Sefaria

The transportation of the Tabernacle required meticulous organization, especially for the heavy structural components that formed its framework and courtyard. Managing this undertaking involved a precise division of labor and a strict inventory system to ensure nothing was lost or delayed during the journey.

Among the components carried by the family of Merari were various pegs and cords. There are different perspectives on exactly which of these items fell under their responsibility. One approach [רש"י, מזרחי, גור אריה ושפתי חכמים] suggests that Merari only carried the pegs and cords associated with the pillars. In this system, the pegs acted as wooden poles tied to the upper edge of the courtyard curtains with cords, hanging from hooks on the pillars. The lower pegs and cords, which prevented the wind from lifting the fabrics, were managed by the family of Gershon, who carried the curtains themselves. Others disagree with this division, questioning why pillars would need pegs and why the responsibility for similar items would be split between families [רמב"ן, הטור הארוך]. They argue that Merari carried all the pegs and cords for the courtyard, while Gershon carried those for the main tent. Alternatively, since Gershon's duties focused exclusively on fabrics, Merari may have been responsible for carrying all the pegs, cords, and wooden pieces for both the Tabernacle and the courtyard [רמב"ן]. These cords served practical purposes: they were used to tie and bundle the structural pieces together for transport, and they helped set up the Tabernacle securely and beautifully [העמק דבר].

A central element of this operation was the requirement to assign the items by name. This demanded a precise log, matching each specific piece to the individual carrying it. The primary reason for this strict personal assignment was the sheer weight of Merari's load, which included heavy boards, pillars, and sockets. By detailing exactly what and how much each Levite had to carry, the system prevented arguments, avoided situations where individuals might try to avoid the heavy lifting, and stopped workers from waiting for someone else to take the burden. This clear division of labor guaranteed efficiency and prevented delays when it was time to travel [רמב"ן, הטור הארוך, צאינה וראינה, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Although this specific instruction was given to the family of Merari, it was practically applied to the other Levite families as well [רמב"ן]. In essence, this detailed assignment echoes the broader responsibility to carefully guard the Tabernacle [חזקוני].

The requirement to organize by name also applied to the items themselves. Every single board, pillar, and socket was marked with a unique name or letter. This ensured that whenever the Tabernacle was rebuilt, each component would be returned to the exact location where it originally stood [העמק דבר, מלבי"ם]. Beyond the technical order, calling these items by name highlighted the spiritual significance of the Tabernacle's parts. It required the Levites to handle and guard the components with a profound awareness of their holiness [רש"ר הירש].
