פרשת נשא

Numbers 7:42Sefaria

בַּיּוֹם֙ הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י נָשִׂ֖יא לִבְנֵ֣י גָ֑ד אֶלְיָסָ֖ף בֶּן־דְּעוּאֵֽל׃

The leadership of the tribe of Gad carries deep historical meaning, capturing the unique choices and future of their people east of the Jordan River. The identity of the tribe's prince reflects two defining aspects of their journey. First, it connects to the concept of gathering. The members of Gad gathered and settled in their cities across the Jordan by God's command, while their strongest warriors left their families behind to march as the vanguard for the rest of the nation. Second, it suggests the idea of addition. The tribe actively expanded their territory beyond the borders originally promised to Abraham. By taking the initiative to claim the lands of Sihon and Og, they added to the nation's inheritance. God agreed with their choice, officially approving this new territory as part of the land of Israel [אור החיים].

The lineage of this leader further reinforces the tribe's dedication, carrying a message that calls the people to know God. This serves as a direct reference to a major event in the tribe's later history. When the warriors of Gad finally returned to their homes across the Jordan, they built a prominent altar. This structure functioned as a permanent monument of witness. It was designed to prove to all future generations that despite living far away on the other side of the river, the tribe of Gad remained completely devoted to God and stood as an inseparable part of the Israelite nation [אור החיים].
