Psalms 69:13Sefaria

A deep personal and national crisis often leads to profound public humiliation, where a person becomes the target of mockery from every level of society. The pain goes beyond internal suffering, turning into complete social isolation as people from all walks of life use this misery for their own entertainment.

The humiliation comes from two opposite ends of the social ladder. On one side are the respected individuals, the judges, and the city leaders who gather at the gates Normally, such important figures do not engage in petty gossip, yet even they spend their time speaking poorly of the sufferer This is sometimes understood as a national allegory, representing wealthy and comfortable foreign nations who sit at the city gates merely to mock the struggling Israelite exiles passing by [אלשיך]. The reason for this ridicule stems either from the individual's past mistakes [אבן עזרא] or simply because they appear strange and unusual to the onlookers [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

On the other end of the spectrum, the humiliation seeps down to the common people and the margins of society. Drunkards turn the sufferer into the subject of their jokes, playing music and singing songs about him When they drink and become merry, they sing of his troubles with deep contempt [מצודת דוד]. Some even throw drinking parties specifically to celebrate his downfall and rejoice in his pain [אלשיך].

Out of this dark pit of humiliation, where the entire society joins together in mockery, a new prayer emerges. The very moment when the ridicule reaches its peak transforms into a time of favor. It becomes the most fitting and powerful moment to cry out to God from the depths of distress and beg for His kindness and salvation [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].
