The sudden appearance of a mysterious hand is not a random occurrence, but a direct heavenly response to the king's actions. It serves as a clear consequence of the events that unfolded just before it. Sent directly from God [ביאור שטיינזלץ], the palm of a hand emerges to actively write and engrave a message [רש״י, מצודת ציון].

Beyond the physical act of writing, the specific timing of this event carries profound meaning. The arrival of the hand and its engraved message represents a final ruling from the heavenly court, resolving a conflict between two opposing historical timelines [מלבי״ם]. On one side, the predetermined seventy years allotted for the rule of the Babylonian empire had reached their end. On the other side stood the remaining lifespan of Belshazzar. The prophets of Israel had foretold that the nations would serve the king of Babylon, his son, and his grandson. As the grandson, Belshazzar held a unique position. If he possessed enough personal merit to justify the continuation of his life, the Babylonian kingdom would have been worthy of enduring under his rule.

The fate of the entire empire hung in the balance, weighed between the general time allotted to the nation and the personal merit of the king. To resolve this delicate balance, God sent the hand to deliver the final judgment, permanently sealing the fate of the kingdom in writing.
