A tragic fate awaits the powerful rulers of the north, who are destined to lose their glory and descend into the lowest depths. These leaders are men of immense power and royalty [מצודת ציון]. There are different views regarding their exact identity. Some identify them as the kings of Babylon [רד״ק], while others believe they represent the Phoenician nations [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This doomed group also includes the entire nation of Sidon. Although the Sidonians had not yet been conquered at the time this prophecy was delivered, their future downfall is clearly foreseen [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

When their day of judgment arrives, every single one of these rulers will fall in battle. Not a single leader will escape, and they will all go down to the grave alongside the rest of the war casualties [מצודת דוד], with some suggesting they will be struck down specifically by the armies of Elam [מלבי״ם].

Their physical defeat will be matched by a profound sense of humiliation. The primary approach among commentators is that in the moment of their destruction, these leaders will be deeply ashamed because their legendary military strength will prove entirely useless in saving them from the sword [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, another perspective explains that their shame will stem from their own cowardice; instead of fighting bravely as expected of great warriors, they will succumb to panic and terror when faced with real danger [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, these rulers will die in their wickedness [רד״ק], remembered as people with closed, unyielding hearts [מצודת דוד]. Stripped of all dignity, they will be buried in disgrace within a single mass grave alongside ordinary fallen soldiers. There, they will carry their rightful humiliation forever, sharing the exact same dark fate as everyone else who goes down to the pit [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
