Ezekiel 32:29Sefaria

Throughout history, the nations that inflicted suffering upon Israel, particularly those responsible for destroying the Temple, face a sealed fate of destruction. They are destined to fall into the depths of the underworld alongside other nations conquered in battle At the center of this ultimate downfall is Edom, which is dragged down into the abyss along with its kings, dignitaries, and high-ranking officials [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Some identify Edom and its leaders with the Roman Empire and the rulers of Italy, viewing them as representatives of Christian nations that will eventually launch a religious war to conquer the Land of Israel. Because their primary goal is to capture the land, there is no need to explicitly state that they spread terror among the living, as was said of other nations; their very arrival to conquer makes their terrifying presence obvious [אברבנאל].

This final resting place represents either the battlefield itself or the dark depths of the underworld, where Edom is forced to dwell among the uncircumcised When considering the role of Edom's famous military strength in their defeat, different perspectives emerge. One approach views their strength as a tragic contrast to their ultimate helplessness. Despite possessing immense power, their might will fail to protect them, and they will fall just like any ordinary casualty of war Another perspective argues that their strength is the very cause of their destruction. Because Edom is a nation historically defined by its warriors, they will eagerly plunge into future conflicts with fierce aggression. It is exactly this relentless drive for battle that will lead them to their death, causing them to be counted among those slain by the sword [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

In the end, Edom and its leaders will be buried deep within the underworld alongside other uncircumcised nations, remaining strictly separated and isolated from circumcised nations such as Ishmael [מלבי״ם]. This descent into the pit is far more than a physical death; it is a state of continuous punishment. They will lie beside those who are uncircumcised of heart—people who may have died a natural death but whose sins remain tightly bound to their bones. In this dark realm, they will face ultimate judgment and receive their exact punishment for the evil they committed [מצודת דוד].
