יחזקאל, פרק ל״ו, פסוק ח׳

The Land of Israel is commanded to wake up from its long emptiness and prepare for the imminent return of the Israelites. The Land exists under special care from God; when the people of Israel are exiled from it, the earth naturally holds back its fruit. Now, the Land is instructed to stop withholding its produce and to no longer fear that strangers will eat its harvest. The return of the people is close at hand, a historical process that began during the era of Cyrus [מלבי״ם].

The mountains and trees are called to abandon their desolate state. Instead of remaining barren, they are to grow, expand, and yield rich food specifically to sustain the nation as it comes back home [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת ציון].

This approaching return is an active and dynamic process. The Israelites are steadily getting closer to their homeland [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They are actively making preparations for this arrival, much like a pregnant woman making ready as she nears the moment of birth [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that the people actively bring their return closer through their own repentance and good deeds. Alternatively, this approaching reality may not describe the physical movement of the people themselves, but rather the fast-approaching day of God's redemption [רד״ק].
