וְיׇקְשָׁ֣ן יָלַ֔ד אֶת־שְׁבָ֖א וְאֶת־דְּדָ֑ן וּבְנֵ֣י דְדָ֔ן הָי֛וּ אַשּׁוּרִ֥ם וּלְטוּשִׁ֖ם וּלְאֻמִּֽים׃

The ancestral line of Jokshan, particularly the descendants of Dedan, reveals a unique blending of families and cultures. These tribes likely settled in southern Arabia. Because the names of these groups also appear in the earlier lineage of Cush, it appears they were a mixture of two distinct family trees [שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The biblical record of this lineage breaks from the standard pattern of ancestry. Rather than stating that fathers simply fathered individuals, the account describes what these descendants became, presenting their identities in the plural. This shift has led to two main ways of understanding their history. The primary approach among commentators is that these are not the names of individual men, but rather the titles of entire nations and tribes that emerged from Dedan. Each son grew into the head of a complete nation that carried his legacy. These groups do not appear in later biblical historical records, likely because they were not highly influential or because they faded away after only a few generations [העמק דבר, שד״ל, ביאור יש״ר, אבי עזר].

Conversely, other scholars understand that these terms are not proper names at all. Instead, they are descriptive titles that capture the character, lifestyle, or trade of these societies [רמב״ן, רד״ק, רש״ר הירש]. According to this perspective, the first group was known for their constant movement. Their title reflects walking or stepping, marking them as people of the road—merchants, guides, and caravan travelers moving from city to city [רמב״ן, אבן עזרא, משכיל לדוד]. Alternatively, this title might describe people who settled in highly organized camps [רש״י, חזקוני, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The identity of the second group is understood in two distinct ways. Some view them as scattered nomads, spreading their tents far and wide across the land [רמב״ן, רש״י, חזקוני]. Others connect their identity to the concept of sharpening or polishing. This could mean they were sharp-eyed scouts watching from a distance [אבן עזרא], swift and independent warriors armed for battle [רש״ר הירש], or skilled coppersmiths working closely together to sharpen their tools [משכיל לדוד]. The third group simply represents a large multitude of people forming independent national units or settling on islands [רמב״ן, משכיל לדוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Bridging these perspectives, it is likely that while these were indeed the formal names of actual nations, those names were intentionally chosen to reflect their specific actions, character, and unique ways of life [העמק דבר].
