Genesis 47:14Sefaria

At the height of the devastating famine, the unfolding family drama pauses to reveal an unprecedented economic reality. The entire financial power of the Middle East shifted completely into the hands of the Egyptian empire under Joseph's administration. The gathering of wealth was exceptionally thorough, leaving the inhabitants without even a fraction of their former capital [אור החיים]. This widespread impoverishment did not happen overnight. In the initial years, the people consumed their own stored food reserves before they had to purchase grain. Because people naturally reduce their spending during an economic crisis, it took several years of gradual depletion before their money completely ran out The sheer volume of wealth amassed was staggering. Although only Egypt and Canaan are explicitly mentioned, silver and gold from all over the world flowed into Egypt as people from every nation arrived to buy food

The collection of this wealth occurred through straightforward commercial transactions, with the people handing over their money in direct exchange for the food they desperately needed Despite the overwhelming demand, Joseph did not exploit the crisis. Instead of raising prices day by day as merchants often do during shortages, he maintained a fixed, fair rate. The fact that he eventually collected all the region's money was solely due to the immense scale and duration of the famine [דברי דוד].

The primary approach among commentators is that this historical moment highlights Joseph's profound wisdom, righteousness, and absolute loyalty. Although he controlled enormous economic power and enjoyed Pharaoh's blind trust without any demand for accountability, Joseph kept his hands completely clean. He took no commission for his efforts, built no secret personal treasuries in Egypt, and smuggled no funds back to Canaan. Instead, he transferred every bit of the revenue directly into the king's treasury Because of his unwavering integrity, God blessed his work. In a remarkable turn of events, Joseph continued to be favored and beloved by the people, even as he systematically emptied their pockets In contrast to this perspective, an alternative tradition suggests that Joseph did not deliver the entirety of the funds to Pharaoh. According to this view, he concealed massive portions of the wealth in three hidden treasuries, intentionally set aside to be discovered by later generations [שפתי כהן].

Regardless of the exact distribution, Pharaoh ultimately proved deeply ungrateful, forgetting the unimaginable wealth Joseph had brought into his royal house. This severe ingratitude is the underlying reason why, generations later during the Plagues of Egypt, the plague of wild animals specifically invaded the inner chambers of Pharaoh's own home Beyond the immediate economic and personal dynamics, this massive transfer of wealth was orchestrated as part of a grand divine plan. The draining of Canaan's assets served as a punishment for its sinful inhabitants [ביאור יש״ר]. More importantly, concentrating the world's wealth inside Egypt was a long-term preparation for the Exodus. It ensured that when the Israelites eventually left bondage, they would depart with great wealth, rightfully inheriting the labor of the nations
