From this physical description, interpretations branch into two main directions. The first approach highlights a material and agricultural focus. In contrast to his brother Zebulun, who is a seafaring merchant, Issachar is a man of the earth. The primary approach among commentators, however, views this powerful animal as a spiritual symbol representing a person who carries the heavy yoke of Torah and Commandments [רש״י, ספורנו, מזרחי]. Some note that just as a donkey has strong bones but little flesh, the people of Issachar minimize their physical pleasures, subduing their material desires for the sake of spiritual toil in Torah study [רבנו בחיי, צאינה וראינה, הכתב והקבלה]. Additionally, some commentators find a subtle historical hint regarding the circumstances of Issachar's birth. The description alludes to the braying of Jacob's donkey, which caused Leah to go out and meet him, ultimately leading to Issachar's conception [קיצור בעל הטורים, אור החיים, רא״ש, תולדות יצחק, דעת זקנים].

The imagery continues with the animal resting peacefully, though the exact nature of its resting place is viewed in different ways. Some understand it as a warm, domestic space near cooking pots on a fire [אבן עזרא, ספורנו, שד״ל], while others describe it as resting among sheepfolds, agricultural fields, or tribal borders [רשב״ם, בכור שור, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The conceptual meaning of this resting posture also invites various perspectives. One view suggests the animal is crouching between two heavy saddlebags, symbolizing Issachar's ability to simultaneously carry the dual responsibilities of Torah study and state leadership [ספורנו, רד״ק, הטור הארוך, רלב״ג]. Another perspective sees this posture as an expression of the tribe's love for peace and tranquility. Issachar prefers to remain within his own territory, avoiding wars and dangerous trade expeditions, and is even willing to pay taxes to maintain a quiet, undisturbed way of life [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, ביאור יש״ר, חזקוני].

Those who emphasize the spiritual dimension interpret this resting between borders as a metaphor for devoted Torah scholars. These scholars travel tirelessly from city to city to spread wisdom, resting on the roads between town boundaries because they lack a permanent home [רש״י, מזרחי, רבנו בחיי]. Others see it as a symbol of permanent residence within houses of study. Specifically, it points to the high court of the Sanhedrin sitting in the Chamber of Hewn Stone, which was located exactly between the holy and the mundane [קיצור בעל הטורים, העמק דבר]. From this state of peaceful permanence emerges the famous partnership with the tribe of Zebulun. While Zebulun travels the world for commerce, Issachar remains fixed in his place, living modestly. He receives financial support from Zebulun, which allows him to fully devote his life to spiritual pursuits [כלי יקר, הכתב והקבלה, מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, this rest is not a state of idleness, but a deliberate, balanced choice that bridges physical needs with spiritual devotion [חתם סופר].
