The King of Aram faces a frustrating reality: his top-secret military plans are constantly being exposed. Realizing that the prophet Elisha knows his every move, the king launches a mission to locate him, sending messengers to find out exactly where the prophet is and to assess his situation.
The primary approach among commentators is that the king's inquiry was a simple request for the prophet's physical location [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מנחת שי וביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, others suggest the king was asking a deeper question about the prophet's current state and condition, leading to two distinctly different interpretations of his ultimate goal.
One perspective views the king's mission as a hostile capture operation. By asking about the prophet's condition, the king wanted to understand his tactical position. Was the prophet resting in an open, undefended town, showing he had no fear? Or was he hiding out of terror in a walled fortress? Once it was discovered that the prophet was in the fortified city of Dothan, the king realized a massive military force would be required. The strategy was to encircle the city and pressure its inhabitants into surrendering the prophet [רלב ג וחומת אנך], allowing the king to seize and deal with him directly [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
In sharp contrast, another approach questions the logic of using brute force against a man known to read minds and see the future. Surely, the prophet would anticipate an attack and simply slip away. Therefore, this view argues that the king had no intention of harming the prophet. Instead, he wanted to recruit him, offering wealth and prestige to convince him to switch allegiances. The inquiry into the prophet's state was actually an investigation into his financial situation. If the prophet was poor, he could be easily swayed; if he was wealthy, the king would need to prepare an extravagant offering to win him over. When the king eventually dispatched a heavy army, it was not to arrest the prophet, but to provide a secure escort, protecting him from any Israelite forces that might try to prevent his defection to Aram [מלבי״ם].
