I Kings 11:29Sefaria

A fateful meeting in an empty field marks the turning point that would eventually tear a kingdom apart. A prophet's secret message provides a newly appointed leader with the courage to rise up against the reigning king [מלבי״ם]. The encounter takes place immediately after Jeroboam receives his new position. As he leaves Jerusalem, his purpose is either to collect the taxes he is now in charge of [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל], or to attend to another matter [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Along the way, he is met by Ahijah, a prophet from the city of Shiloh [רד״ק]. The prophet ensures they are completely alone, carefully avoiding any witnesses who might report their meeting to King Solomon

In this hidden setting, the prophet delivers a life-altering message, revealing that Jeroboam will rule over ten of the tribes following Solomon's death. However, he does not anoint the future king with oil, as the kings of Israel are not traditionally anointed [אברבנאל]. A central detail of this event is the presence of a new, wide, and long cloak [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Commentators offer different perspectives on who is actually wearing this garment. Some suggest that the prophet Ahijah wears the cloak This aligns with the tradition that righteous individuals tear their own clothing out of deep sadness over division and conflict within the royal family of David [רד״ק].

Conversely, others maintain that Jeroboam is the one wearing the new garment In this view, the clothing carries profound symbolic meaning regarding Jeroboam's character at that specific time. Just as the new cloak is entirely free of flaws, Jeroboam's spiritual state and his dedication to the Torah are completely without fault. Furthermore, Jeroboam is understood to carry a spark of the soul of Joseph. Because Joseph successfully resisted temptation when his master's wife grabbed his garment, Jeroboam is rewarded in a corresponding manner by being wrapped in a pristine new cloak [חומת אנך].
