ישעיהו, פרק א׳, פסוק ט״ז

Isaiah 1:16Sefaria

The prophet’s message outlines a step-by-step journey of complete return to God, moving from fixing past mistakes to making practical commitments for the future. The process begins with a vivid command to wash and become clean [רש״י]. The primary approach among commentators is that this serves as a metaphor for purifying the heart [רד״ק]. On a more tangible level, it is a direct call for people to wash their hands of the blood and sins that stain them [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

After this initial washing, the individual must reach a state of complete clarity and purity [מצודת ציון]. This cleansing cannot be partial; it must be thorough enough to erase the spiritual stain entirely. This level of purity carries a deeper meaning, combining the idea of cleanliness with the concept of merit. It reveals that a profound return to God, when driven by love, actually has the power to transform past wrongs into positive merits [מלבי״ם].

Shifting from metaphor to practical action [שד״ל], the prophet demands the active removal of evil deeds from God's sight. Sins constantly stand before God as accusers, and a genuine return to Him is the only way to clear them away [מצודת דוד]. Because God constantly examines the deepest parts of the mind and heart, this process cannot be empty lip service. It requires true, complete inner intention [אהבת יהונתן, ביאור שטיינזלץ, שד״ל]. Practically, this involves addressing offenses that still exist, particularly those between people, by actively fixing the damage—such as returning stolen items and seeking forgiveness from those who were hurt [מלבי״ם].

Once the past and present are corrected, the focus shifts to the future with a clear instruction to stop doing bad things. This requires actively halting and avoiding harmful behavior [מצודת ציון], serving as an absolute demand to break the cycle of hurting others and to turn away from bad from this moment forward [מלבי״ם, רד״ק, רש״י, מצודת דוד]. This step opens a broader sequence of ten specific warnings and expressions of return found throughout this prophecy. These ten calls directly correspond to the Ten Days of Repentance, as well as the ten verses recited during the special prayers of Kingship, Remembrance, and the Shofar [רש״י].
