ישעיהו, פרק א׳, פסוק י״ט

Isaiah 1:19Sefaria

אִם־תֹּאב֖וּ וּשְׁמַעְתֶּ֑ם ט֥וּב הָאָ֖רֶץ תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

A divine call presents the people with a clear choice, promising that repentance and obedience will lead to prosperity and security. By changing their ways, they can prevent the damage caused by their past actions.

The requirement for this transformation involves a willingness to change and an active obedience. The primary approach among commentators is that this willingness represents a sincere submission to God and an agreement to follow His will. Elaborating on this, [שד״ל] explains that this is not merely a vague, general desire. Rather, it is an explicit, independent commitment to align with the will of God and improve one's ways. Taking this a step further, [מלבי״ם] draws a deep distinction between external compliance and internal devotion. He notes that this willingness must be a profound, heartfelt desire rather than just lip service. Simply performing the Commandments in practice is insufficient if the heart does not truly agree with the actions. Alongside this internal desire, there must be practical obedience. This means actively following the voice of God and His Commandments, as well as paying close attention to the prophets who urge the people to abandon their harmful paths [אהבת יהונתן].

When the people fulfill these conditions of heartfelt willingness and active obedience, they are promised a life of peace and abundance. They will live securely in their land and joyfully eat its finest fruits. This promise serves as a direct reversal and correction of the tragic reality described earlier in the prophecy. Rather than watching helplessly as strangers consume their crops and wealth, the people themselves will finally enjoy the good of their land [רד״ק, אבן עזרא].
