ישעיהו, פרק ל׳, פסוק ט׳

Isaiah 30:9Sefaria

A harsh indictment is leveled against the Israelites [רש״י], tracing a three-stage moral and spiritual decline that distances them from God. This progression exposes not merely the act of rebellion, but the deep psychological and ideological roots driving their behavior.

The descent begins with stubbornness and a refusal to follow God and His commandments. In its historical context, this defiance took shape when the Israelites chose to seek military protection from the king of Egypt rather than turning to God for help [מצודת דוד].

As the spiritual decay deepens, the people become deceitful, lacking faith and growing accustomed to living in denial [שד״ל, מצודת ציון]. Commentators offer different perspectives on the nature of this denial. Some suggest it is a rejection of God's active providence in the world [מצודת דוד]. Others view it as a betrayal of their fundamental relationship with Him; although they are God's children, their refusal to obey acts as a denial of His role as their Father [רד״ק]. Additionally, this deceit manifests in a stubborn refusal to admit their wrongdoings, as they choose instead to lie and cover up their actions [אברבנאל].

The final and most severe stage of this downward spiral is a complete refusal to listen to God's teachings [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. This is not a passive lack of interest, but an active and shameless resistance. When prophets arrive to guide them and share God's truth, the people reject the message entirely. Instead, they demand that the prophets speak flattering lies that align with their own personal desires [אברבנאל].

Looking at the overall progression, a clear worsening of the sin emerges. It starts with those who still believe in God but rebel in practice because they are driven by their physical desires. The situation deteriorates further with those who become deceitful and completely deny God's commands. Finally, it reaches its lowest point with those who shut their ears entirely, refusing to even entertain the teachings of God [מלבי״ם].
